"In a time when news outlets are being pulled toward in-depth analysis and commentary, I still feel a sentimental attachment to the "old" world of breaking news. I'm not the only one: Although news aggregators have made it harder for news sources to hang on to their proprietary value, algorithmic traders are recognizing that the next step beyond training their trading engines to act on historic trends in price movements is being able to act on the market-moving events that prompt those price changes. So news feeds tagged for use in algo trading models, once considered esoteric, are seeing increased take-up by those looking for a competitive edge."

"How does news become actionable information, in a split second? The software tools that convert news into machine-readable data put numbers on, among other things, sentiments about companies mentioned in news stories and quick assessments on how the news will affect the firms’ prospects in the markets they operate in. This gives traders quantifiable values on which they can make better and often instantaneous decisions."
